“Paying an homage to personal histories, this painting captures a moment in time which is inspired by my own nostalgia for the decadence of years gone by, as well as by the history of ‘severed pasts’. The shadows on the walls of the opulent mansion reference Voland’s trio in ‘The Master and Margarita’, one of my favorite works of literature, and the mansion itself is a very real place in Moscow — The Gorky Museum, an Art Nouveau mansion built for a family of merchants before the Russian revolution. At every step this painting is a nod to a past which no longer exists, and our tendency to run both away from and towards it.”
